How to Plan a Garden

You have a spot all picked out and want to get to work with your garden. Before you can create a garden you have to plan a garden.  The work begins long before you start to ever touch the first item to be placed in your garden. For instance if the ground has not been turned in the fall it will have to be done at the start of spring before anything else can be done.  The easiest of gardens to be cared for is the one that is planned out completely and things such as fertilizer should be on hand.

When you plan a garden the right spot is a must for success. There may be limitations due to the amount of space you have. There are some things that are vital when planning a garden. How large you want your garden to be is a major factor in choosing its location.

Plan a garden around the soil. It is best to use soil that drains easily and loose and fertile.  Organic matter must be purchased in the correct amounts if you have to use clay or sandy soil. There has to be plenty of sun in the location you chose as well. Plants especially vegetables thrive in the right amount of the sunlight.

You want to plan a garden in an area free of trees and bushes. These will compete with the plants in your garden for sun, food and water. Walnut trees will let off toxins that stop the vegetables from growing.

A nearby water source is taken into consideration when planning a garden. When plants are first starting out and crops are being transplanted it is vital they receive the proper amount of watering.  Convenience is a factor when you plan a garden as well.
The closer to the house the garden has been planted the better when it comes time to get the vegetables out of it.

When you plan a garden the major factor once you know how big and where, is what you are going to plant in that garden. You want to be sure that the vegetables planted can not only grow successfully but that you and your family can eat them. Pick based on what you enjoy eating and then use the other factors to make a determination.

If there is areas of shade in the garden then remember that the vegetables that are grown for fruits or seeds require more sunlight. The plants that produce leaves and roots for consumption are fine in the shade. The smaller gardens should focus on plants that are known for producing large amounts of vegetables on one plant. You don’t want to use all of the space for running plants such as watermelons.

The season is also needed to take into consideration in planning a garden. There are some plants that grow during certain times of the year. Crops have to be rotated so it is important to plant them and know where each item is planted.

The rotation of the plants is what keeps the soil from becoming stripped and is one of the most important things when you plan a garden from one year to the next.
